What a visit to the reindeer costs
A reindeer experience near Tromsø is not a bargain, but the prices vary significantly. The cheapest option in our comparison, an experience with reindeer sleds, feeding, and Sami culture lasting 2.5 to 3.5 hours, starts at $132 per person. At the top end is the trip to Camp Tamok with reindeer sleds, starting at $335 for 7 hours.
In between lie most of the offers. The most booked classic with sleds and feeding with a Sami guide starts at $200 for 4 hours. Visits to the camp with Sami culture and lunch range from $178 to $179. Evening tours with dinner and a chance to see the Northern Lights range from $178 to $230.
Every amount here is a starting price per person. The actual price depends on the date, the number of participants, and any optional extras, and will be shown to you during the booking step. The range does, however, give you a good feel for what to expect before you look at the individual offers in detail and decide on one. Plan with a little buffer on the high side.

What is included in the price
For most reindeer experiences near Tromsø, transport from the city is included. This is important because the camps are located outside the city; the classic is about 30 minutes from Tromsø.1 Without a car, getting there would be difficult, and a taxi into the snowy landscape would quickly become expensive. The meeting point for the classic is the Prostneset bus terminal in the center, which you can reach on foot from many hotels. Check with other offers where exactly they depart.
There is also the time with the animals, the guidance of a guide, and for many tours a warm meal. The classic includes feeding, a reindeer sled ride, a warm meal in the lavvu, and a joik. Other tours feature lunch or dinner on the program, sometimes with, sometimes without sleds. The more there is on the program, the longer the day usually is, and the higher the price tends to be.
Read the offer carefully for what is included. The title does not always reveal everything, and differences in food, sleds, or duration often explain the price difference between two tours that sound similar at first glance. A cheaper offer without food is not necessarily better if you then pay for a meal at a restaurant. Therefore, factor in food and extras when comparing prices.

Value for money according to guests
How satisfied guests are with the price is shown in the sub-scores. For the classic with sleds and feeding, guests give value for money 4.5 points, while guide and transport each reach 4.8. The experience itself therefore impresses more than the price, which is not unusual for popular tours in Tromsø. Value for money is therefore the sub-score where the tours differ the most.
The fjord cruise with feeding and lunch scores best: 4.7 points for value for money, with an overall rating of 4.93. Snowshoe hiking with a reindeer encounter also scores a solid 4.6 for value for money. With these tours, guests apparently feel they are getting a lot for their money. Both offers combine the reindeer with a second experience, which for many guests justifies the price.
At the bottom end are two evening tours, each with 4.1 points for value for money. That does not necessarily mean they are bad; disappointment often plays a role when the Northern Lights fail to appear. Anyone booking an evening should keep this possibility in mind and see the evening with the reindeer as the main event. Our page on reindeer and the Northern Lights explains what to look out for.

Short or in-depth?
The biggest lever for the price is the duration. A visit of 2.5 to 3.5 hours from $132 is roughly one third cheaper than the classic, yet still includes a sleigh ride, feeding, and Sami culture. For anyone who mainly wants to experience the animals, this is a great choice. It is especially sensible for families or travelers on a tight budget. However, expect less time by the fire and a more compact schedule.
Those who want more relaxation, a meal, and time for conversation pay more for the classic but get a more rounded day in return. The extra hour in the lavvu is what many guests remember most, and the joik at the end is part of that. The warm meal in the tent is also included with the classic, which explains part of the price difference. If you would plan a lunch anyway, factor that in when comparing.
The longer excursions with a fjord cruise or to Camp Tamok are the most expensive because they fill a whole day. They are worth it if you want to see the landscape and have nothing else planned that day. They are not necessary for a first impression of the reindeer. Visitors who have already been to reindeer can find new impressions here instead. For a second visit to Tromsø, such an excursion can therefore be just right.
From prices and how they work
A from price is the lowest price at which a tour is offered. Depending on the date, season, or option, the actual price may be higher. That is why we always say from, and why it is worth checking the booking calendar before you commit. During the winter high season, popular dates book up quickly, which can limit availability. Book early if you want to lock in a specific day.
Many tours let you reserve without paying right away, and canceling up to 24 hours in advance is free. This gives you flexibility: you secure a spot in the high season and make a final decision shortly before, depending on the weather and your mood. This flexibility is especially valuable for a tour whose sleigh ride depends on snow. Mark the free cancellation deadline in your calendar.
Also check which prices apply to children during the booking step. For families, this can make a big difference quickly. Our calculator on this page helps you estimate the total cost for your group before you see the exact prices in the calendar. The from prices on this page are a good starting point. Make sure to include all travelers, including children.
What else you pay for
In addition to the tour price, there are a few costs in Tromsø you should plan for. The most important is clothing: anyone who does not already have warm winter gear should invest in good boots, wool underwear, and gloves before the trip. Visit Tromsø recommends wool layers, warm sweaters and jackets, warm shoes, gloves, a scarf, and a hat.3 Good clothing is a one-time purchase.
Some operators have a small shop at the camp. Guests recommend in their reviews stopping by there, and one guest would have liked to buy a book about the Sami. If you want to take home a souvenir, you should leave some room in your budget. One guest from Greece specifically writes that you should not forget the shop. Whether you buy anything there is of course up to you, and the visit itself costs nothing.
Drinks and food outside the tour naturally add up, as does a tip if you would like to give one. In Norway, tipping is not obligatory, but it is gladly appreciated for good service. It is better to plan a little extra than to count the pennies at the end. A snack for the way back and a warm drink in the city are among the small expenses that add up. If you factor these items in beforehand, there will be no surprises.
Our pick
For a first visit we recommend the classic from $200: lots of reviews, a complete program with sleigh ride, feeding, a meal, and joik, and a camp run by a Sami family.2 If you want to save money, choose the shorter visit from $132. That way you get the full program for a mid-range price.
Those who want to invest a whole day and pay attention to good value are well advised with the fjord cruise including feeding and lunch, even though the price from $283 is higher. Guests give it top marks in all subcategories. For a second visit or a day focused on landscape it is the best choice. But expect a long day that leaves little room for other plans.
And for all who want to learn more about the Sami after the visit: a city tour on Sami history and mythology costs from $59 and is therefore the cheapest addition. For a manageable amount of money you get a deeper insight into the culture behind the reindeer. It fits well on a day before or after the camp visit. It is also a good idea for a day with bad weather.
